The Iraqi people are portrayed on our TV screens as victims – first of Saddam Hussein, then of US and UK bombs. Anne Alexander reveals the mass movements that shook Iraq in the 1940s and 1950s, when millions of workers and peasants rose up against imperialism. Mike Kidron, who died recently, was the founding editor of this journal 43 years ago. Ian Birchall introduces a selection of extracts from his early editorials, spanning, among other things, pacifism and the bomb, confronting Nazis on our streets, and the role of the theoretical journal. Italy, 1922, was a country on a knife-edge. We reprint an article first published in 1932 recounting how the people of Parma turned their streets into barricades, successfully fighting off Mussolini's 'punitive raids' and sending the fascists running with their tails between their legs. --- Editor: John Rees. Assistant editors: Alex Callinicos, Chris Harman, John Molyneux, Lindsey German, Colin Sparks, Mike Gonzalez, Peter Morgan, Jim Wolfreys, Mike Haynes, Judy Cox, Sally Campbell, Megan Trudell, Mark O'Brien, Michael Lavalette, Sam Ashman and Rob Hoveman.
