WHERE IS LABOUR GOING? Three years into the biggest Labour majority government ever, Blair and his supporters are in disarray. The victory of Ken Livingstone as London mayor was a bitter defeat for their politics. But is this a temporary crisis or something deeper? Lindsey German looks at the repercussions of this disillusionment for Labour's core support, charting the exodus of grassroots activists. Current events have their echoes in the last century. Mark O'Brien looks to the formation of the Labour Party and asks whether the face of left wing politics in Britain could have been very different, while Judy Cox takes us on to the crisis-ridden inter-war years, looking at the Independent Labour Party and the Socialist League. Peter Morgan looks at the life and politics of the new mayor of London. John Newsinger asks why a Labour government with such a vast majority is quite so quick to give in to the bigots and big business.
ABBIE BAKAN reviews Globalize This! a collection of essays about the new movement opening up to challenge global capital post-Seattle. Jim Wolfreys looks at the work of Pierre Bourdieu, who has been at the forefront of the rebirth of radical intellectuals in France, while Nick Barrett adds to the debate around the prospects for the left in the context of class polarisation in Europe.
TONY CLIFF founder of the Socialist Workers Party, inspired generations of revolutionaries. Following his death earlier this year, we carry an appreciation by John Rees, and reprint an article that was first published in the Israeli paper Yediyot Aharonot in 1991. The article traces Cliff's footsteps, from his early life in Palestine, to a public meeting in north London following the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. Along the way, it draws on conversations with people who knew him as a young man, and gives an insight into the life of a full time revolutionary.
